Import audio directly from audio files – Serum has a variety of methods and options for analyzing audio for breaking it apart into individual waveforms. You can import single-cycle wavetables of course, as well as many at once (with in-built sorting options, or manual re-ordering). Morph between various wavetables using standard linear interpolation (crossfading) or via harmonic/spectral morphing. Draw directly on the waveform, with optional grid-size snapping and a variety of shape tools. Generate or modify waveforms using FFT (additive). Create or process waveforms using formula functions. Processing menu options allow you to do the other tasks you would want, such as apply fades, crossfades, normalize, export, and much more.

MODULATION – WORK THE WAY YOU WANT TO

Xfer

The modulation system allows for drag and drop connections between mod sources and destinations. Want an LFO controlling a filter cutoff? Simply drag the LFO title to the cutoff knob. This LFO->Filter connection will now appear in the Mod Matrix as well. In other words, you have two views/approaches for creating and modifying your modulations: sometimes a list is nice, other times you just want the job done fast and easy.

REALTIME WAVETABLE MANIPULATION

In addition to moving through the set of wavetables (up to 256 make up a single oscillator), you can manipulate the waveform itself in a separate realtime process referred to as Warp. This allows for FM/AM/RM/Oscillator Sync and many other ways to modify the waveform, including “Remap” modes – a graph editor for drawing your own custom table manipulations.

FILTER TYPES

Serum includes all of the filter types found in LFOTool in addition to some brand-new ones. Flangers, Phasers, and Comb filters all of which can key-track to the musical note you play. Dual filter types let you control or morph between filter types. Get creative with atypical processes for filters such as downsampling, or the unique filter types found nowhere before, such as the dirty-sounding French LPF.

BUILT-IN SUITE OF EFFECTS

An effects rack with 10 effects modules lets you get your sound all the way to the finish line inside Serum. Effects can be re-ordered to any configuration you want. Virtually all effect parameters are also available as modulation destinations. This is especially useful on monophonic synth sounds. For example, apply an LFO to control reverb size or dry/wet, or velocity to control distortion amount. Many of these effects and modes were built just for Serum, so there are many unique effects to choose from, such as Hyper, which simulates (additional) unison amounts, or a dual-waveshaper which allows for a distortion you can morph between two separate wave shapes.

ADVANCED UNISON

Serum will let you stack a single oscillator to use up to 16 voices. Each of the wavetable oscillators have a number of unison advanced parameters. Stack settings allow for note (e.g. octave) layering to get a fuller sound for a single note-press. Set the unison voices to all have their unique waveform at once with the Unison WT Pos setting, or have them all skewed in a different way with the unison Warp control. A variety of unison tuning modes per-oscillator let you get the stack sound blooming or swarming like you want.

At the same time, I am interested in those cross-platform libraries that works on more than one compiler.

How do I use Borland Graphics Interface (graphics.h)?

For those of you migrating from Borland, you may be wondering where graphics.h is. Unfortunately, graphics.h is a Borland specific library and cannot be used with Dev-C++. Fortunately, a benevolent soul by the name of Michael Main has modified a BGI emulation library for Windows applications to be used under MinGW (and therefore Dev-C++) which he has aptly named WinBGIm.
The files we need are:

(download to C:Dev-Cpplib)
After you have downloaded the files to the correct locations, you can now use WinBGIm’s graphic.h as you would Borland’s graphics.h with a few caveats.
Using library files:
First, you have to tell Dev-C++ where to find the library functions that WinBGIm references–this is done in the “Project Options” dialog box.
Here are instructions on how to do this with a new project:
• Go to “Project” menu and choose “Project Options” (or just press ALT+P).
• Go to the “Parameters” tab
• In the “Linker” field, enter the following text:

  5. The installer will now ask whether or not it should try to detect your keyboard layout. You can select <Yes> to allow the system to detect the keyboard layout. If it is successful you will automatically skip to step 8.

    If the detection is not successful you will need to complete the manual selection process in steps 6 and 7 as if you had selected <No>.

    In this tutorial we will select <No> to allow us to manually select our keyboard layout. Pressing the Tab key will allow you to move between selections.

  6. The first step in selecting your keyboard's layout is to choose the Country of Origin for the keyboard.

    We will choose Engish (US) which is the default.

  7. Next you will be asked to select the specific layout within the Country of Origin of your keyboard.

    We will again choose English (US) which is the default.

  8. Your system will now try to automatically configure your network options. If it is unable to do this you will be presented with the following failure message:

    To continue to the network configuration step press the Enter key.

  9. To configure your network settings you will be presented with four options.

    The first two options allow you to retry the auto-configuration process. These options are useful if you are able to correct the reason your network was not able to be configured automatically and you wish to retry the automatic configuration.

    You can also choose to skip configuring the network by selecting Do not configure the network at this time. If you choose to skip configuring the network, you will need to manually configure your network settings after installation completes before your system will be able to communicate with other servers on your network.

    For our example we will select Configure network manually.

    After you have made your selection press the Enter key to continue.

  10. Now that we have selected Configure network manually we will be asked to enter the Internet Protocol (IP) address for our system. If you do not know your IP address please consult your network administrator for the information.

    In this example we will use the IP address 1.2.3.4.

    In the field provided, enter the IP address of 1.2.3.4. When done, press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  11. You will next be prompted to enter the network mask for your network. Again, if you do not know your network mask please consult your network administrator for the information.

    In our example we will use the default 255.255.255.0 as our network mask.

    Since we are accepting the default network mask of 255.255.255.0 simply press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  12. In this step we will enter the IP address of the network gateway for our network. Your network administrator can provide this information to you if you do not know what it is.

    In our example we will use the address 1.2.3.1 as our gateway address.

    In the field provided, enter the IP address of 1.2.3.1 for the gateway address. When done, press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  13. In this step we will enter the IP address of the primary name server for our network. Your network administrator can provide this information to you if you do not know what it is.

    In our example we will use the address 8.8.8.8 as our name server address.

    In the field provided, enter the IP address of 8.8.8.8 for the name server address. When done, press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  14. Next you will be asked to enter the name that this host will be known as. This name can be a single word (no spaces) and should not contain special characters such as '%'. It is common, however, for system adminitrators to utilize a dash '-' in their host names. (Such as web-server-1)

    When selecting your host's name, it is important to select a meaningful name to prevent confusion with other hosts on your network.

    Since the host we are building in this tutorial will not appear on a network we will leave the host name as its default value of ubuntu. Press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  15. In this step, you will be asked to enter the full name of the primary user of the system. (Note: On Ubuntu systems, this user is NOT the root super user but will have administrative capabilities.)

    On our system we will set this user name to TechOnTheNet but you may choose to use your full name (e.g. John Doe). Press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  16. Next, we will enter the user name we will use to log in. This name should be lowercase and not include spaces or non-alphanumeric characters (Characters that are not numbers or alphabetic characters).

    In our example we will use techonthenet for our user account. Press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  17. On this screen, you will need to enter the password you would like to use for the techonthenet user account.

    It is important to choose a strong password that cannot be easily guessed and that you'll remember! (Typically strong passwords are more than 8 characters long and contain upper/lower case characters and have numbers or special characters such as a '$'.)

    After entering the password, press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  18. In this step, you will be asked to re-enter the password you used from the previous step. This is to ensure that the passwords match.

    After re-entering the password, press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  19. If you entered a weak password, the installer will prompt you to confirm that you want to proceed or re-enter a stronger password.

    Since our machine will only be used for this tutorial, we will accept the risk and continue. If you choose <No> you will have to repeat the password selection (steps 11 and 12). If you choose <Yes> you will proceed to the next step.

  20. Ubuntu allows you to encrypt your home directories for security. This is useful for situations where users require security on items they keep in their home directories.

    For this tutorial, we will select <No> and not encrypt the home directories.

  21. In this step, you will configure the clock and choose the time zone your computer will use. The system time services will use this setting to display the correct local time.

    On our system, we will select the Pacific time zone.

  22. Ubuntu will now ask you to configure your hard disk partitions. There are several choices available:

    Guided - use entire disk
    Creates a non-LVM (Logical Volume Manager) partition layout which follows a more traditional UNIX layout. This scheme creates fixed partitions which can not be easily changed without re-installation or advanced knowledge of Linux.
    Guided - use entire disk and set up LVM
    Allocates a small boot partition and places the remaining available disk space into a logical volume in which the other partitions will be created. LVM allows additional flexibility in how the logical volume will be laid out or changed in the future.
    Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM
    Creates a similar partition layout as the previous option but encrypts the logical volume with a password.
    Manual
    Allows manual configuration of disk partitions. This is an advanced mode typically used by experienced UNIX administrators and allows full control over the layout of the partitions.

    For this tutorial we will choose the second option which is Guided - use entire disk and set up LVM.

  23. Next we will need to select the hard disk that we will apply the hard drive partitions to. Since our computer contains only one hard drive we can accept the defaults and continue. If your system has more than one hard disk, you will need to select the appropriate hard drive your system is set to boot from.

  24. The installer will now confirm that you are prepared to write the partition layout to the hard disk you have selected.

    IMPORTANT: This is your last chance to abort the installation before your hard disk is erased. Please be sure you have backed up any data you would like to keep!

    If you are ready to apply your selected partition layout to the hard disk, tab to <Yes> and then press the Enter key.

  25. In this step you will be entering the amount of hard disk space you would like the installer to use for Ubuntu Linux Server. The installer will by default fill in the total amount of space available on your hard disk but you can lower this value to leave some space available for other purposes.

    Values are typically entered in MB (megabytes), GB (gigabytes) or TB (terabytes).

    We will leave the value unchanged which will tell the installer to utilize all available hard disk space. Press the Tab key until you get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  26. The installer will confirm that you are ready to write the partition information to the hard disk.

    Since these settings are correct and we are ready to write the partition information we will select <Yes> to continue.

  27. If you utilize a HTTP proxy on your network, you can enter the proxy information on this screen.

    In this tutorial we will not provide any HTTP proxy information so we press the Tab key until we get to <Continue> and then press the Enter key.

  28. Next, the installer will ask if you would like to configure automatic system updates. The options available are:

    No automatic updates
    The system will not apply any updates automatically. System updates will require manual intervention by a system administrator.
    Install security updates automatically
    Updates which resolve security issues will be applied automatically once per day.
    Manage system with Landscape
    System updates will be managed externally by the Landscape application suite.

    It is always a good idea to ensure security updates are applied in a timely manner so we will select Install security updates automatically for this tutorial.

    TIP: If you are concerned that an automatic update might break other software or services the host offers you may want to select No automatic updates and apply the updates manually when required.

  29. At this step we will be asked to select any additional software or services we would like to install on the host. By default the standard system utilities option is selected. This option contains many of the system utilities that we will need to manage our system so we will leave it selected.

    Since we would like to be able to log into the host using secure shell (SSH) from another host on the network we will also select OpenSSH server.

    You can select a menu option by pressing the Space Bar. Moving between menu items can be accomplished by using your keyboard's Arrow keys.

    When you are finished selecting the software, select <Continue>.

  30. The system will now ask to install the GRUB boot loader onto the master boot record of your hard disk.

    GRUB is used during the boot up process to enable Ubuntu Linux Server to load.

    We will select <Yes> to install the GRUB boot loader.

  31. The installation is complete!

    The installer will now prompt you to reboot the computer.

    Select <Continue> to reboot into Ubuntu Linux Server.

  32. If all goes well in a few minutes you will see a login prompt similar to the following screenshot.

    Congratulations, you've installed Ubuntu Server Linux!

    You can now log in using the user name and password you configured during steps 10, 11 and 12.

A good techno record lends itself to a few well-placed effects. Many techno cuts are sparse enough that there's room for DJs to add imaginative effects to tracks and mixes. If you're a DJ who's keen to learn more about how to use Traktor's effects in techno sets, read on...

Delays and Single FX Chains

Delay is an effect that can be creatively used in many ways during sets. There are many types of delay in Traktor, each with a unique sound that should be explored. To learn to use delay, practise using each type of delay in a Single FX unit in Traktor. To create a Single FX unit, open the Preferences, navigate to the Effects section and in the FX Panel mode select Single.

  • Top 3 FX settings in Traktor Pro 2. Im a bedroom DJ & have fallen in love with Traktor. Really taken up with the range of FX it offers. The beatmasher is fun, but screw around with the settings. The Rot and Gate can make for some really interesting sounds when mixing. The Filter is great. For the macros, my favorite is the Laser.

Traktor's 'standard' delay may be a seemingly common effect in Traktor, but it's capable of producing amazing textures. Begin by loading up Delay into a single FX unit and turn the effect on by pressing the ON button. The Dry/Wet can either be at 50%, or at zero and slowly turned up clockwise. New rhythms can be created by turning the Rate (SPR level) down, then raising it back up again.

Use the EQ on the mixer or the Filter in the delay to cut the bass so only the percussion and hi hats are delayed. Close the FX by gradually turning down the D/W to 0 or pressing ON to turn the FX off. A quick ending tends to sounds best if you turn off the effect on beat with the track.

Delay T3

Start with the Delay T3 on, the D/W down to 0 and the Rate (FR.R) to about 0.25. Slowly raise up the D/W up and once it's at about 50% turn the FR.R on. Experiment with turning the Rate (FR.R) counter clockwise, then clockwise to create interesting sounds and transitions. I find Delay T3 works best with tracks that have sparsely programmed rhythms.

Delay Freeze

The Beatslicer And Beatmasher Traktor Pro 2 Software

The Delay's Freeze parameter can be used to create transitions in a mix where other tracks can be brought in, or the track that's playing can trail out entirely. To use this effect, start with the Delay on in a single FX unit, then push Freeze (FRZ) located underneath the Feedback button. It takes a few seconds for the Delay to fade away, which gives time to mix in other tracks. This technique also works well with the other types of delay, including Ramp Delay and Tape Delay.


Ramp Delay

Ramp delay is a an effect that can produce psychedelic sounding, tripped out delay effects that sound great on techno tracks. Start out with the Dry/Wet (D/W) on the Ramp Delay turned to 50%, the Filter at about 80%, the Duration at 1/4” and the Rate all the way up at 1/32. Ramp Delay sounds best when it's applied during a part of the song with minimal percussion.


Turn on the effect then take the Rate down to 1/16, then turn the rate back up to 1/32. Once you master this, experiment with starting with the D/W control set to Dry at 0 and slowly turn it up while you sweep the Rate control. To transition back into the track, slowly turn the D/W down to 0 for a gradual fade. To turn the Ramp Delay off quickly, simply press either FX 1 or FX 2 (whichever its assigned to) to take the effect out of the mix.

FX Chains and Groups

FX can be used in Groups in Traktor, which mean more than three FX are stacked on top of each other. To create an FX chain, open the Preferences, then Effects and in the FX Panel mode, then select Group.

Beatmasher2 + LaserSlicer + Strrretch (slow)

On one FX Group, choose the BeatBeatmasher2 in the first slot, the LaserSlicer in the second slot and the + Strrretch (slow) in the third slot. This combination of FX can be used to produce trippy stretched out FX that can compliment techno sets. Try slowly turning on each FX on within the group one at a time, and adjusting its parameters to learn what each individual FX sounds like. Once you're comfortable with each effect on its own, try turning on each FX and slowly turning up the D/W so the entire chain is heard together. Adjust each parameter individually and try turning the FX within the chain on and off. Keep adjusting and experimenting and turn off the entire chain by dropping it out (with the ON button) or slowly bringing down the D/W of the chain.

BeatSlicer/ Filter:92 LFO/Delay Chain

Any FX chain that involves delay works great for techno and the BeatSlicer is a useful effect for creating rhythmic interest. In one FX Group, choose the BeatSlicer in the first slot, the Filter:92 LFO in the second slot and the Delay in the third slot. I tried placing the BeatSlicer around eight o'clock and the Filter:92 LFO and Delay around 2 o'clock. Start with the D/W of the chain at zero and slowly bring up the D/W level until the FX chain is audible. Practise adjusting the parameters of the three FX, or simply use the D/W to mix the entire chain in and out of the mix.

Beatmasher Chain

The Beatmasher can be used to create staccato snare fills, and Reverb is placed in this chain to add ambience to the sound. To create the chain, place the Beatmaster2 in the first slot, Formant Filter or Peak Filter in the second slot and the Reverb into the third FX slot in a group. In a minimal section of a track with claps or snares, bring the D/W level of the chain slowly up and adjust the level of the Beatmasher2 until it catches the snare or clap. I find it's best if the Reverb is set to a specific level when the chain is in use, as adjustments to the Reverb make a big difference in the overall sound. Use the Filter to create new rhythms and patterns and play with the snare or clap. Try adjusting the D/W level, and then re-adjust each parameter again within the chain. This is quite a fun chain to play with that can add a lot of interest to minimal tracks.
